Genetic informationRough (ro) gene is a recessive gene which spontaneously arose in an RIII inbred strain. The line also carries an incubation time gene Prn-i-n linked to Prn, the prion gene complex. Prn-i is a scrapie incubation time gene and reduces the incubation period for the development of Scrapie, a transmissible neurodegenerative disease. This strain can be used in Scrapie, Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) also known as Mad cow disease, and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) studies.
Phenotypic informationHomozygous:
RIII tend to have the shortest incubation period within the sinc S7S7 genotype. Sinc, more commonly known as Prnp, is the gene which controls scrapie incubation. They are also a long lived strain of mouse and therefore excellent for life span studies. However, they do tend to suffer from necrosis of the tail. Mouse Genome informatics reports that mice homozygous for the allele display abnormal coat appearance, abnormal coat/hair pigmentation, matted coat, greasy coat, abnormal hair shaft morphology, abnormal hair medulla, abnormal hair medulla air spaces, abnormal hair medullary septa cells, and wavy vibrissae. According to D. S. FALCONER, G.D. SNELL, TWO NEW HAIR MUTANTS, ROUGH AND FRIZZY: In The House Mouse, Journal of Heredity, Volume 43, Issue 1, January 1952, Pages 53–57, https://doi.org/10.1093/oxfordjournals.jhered.a106262, the mice show whiskers waved in the young as in hair-waving genes, but not coat. Body hairs have modified internal structure and coat appears rough and unkempt.

Heterozygous:
No overt phenotype known in heterozygotes. The ro gene is a recessive gene and the mice are homozygous maintained by inbreeding.
