The Finnish EMMA Node Successfully Concludes a Course on Tissue Analysis for Doctoral Students

March 26, 2024

The Finnish EMMA node at the University of Oulu successfully organised a practical course on tissue analysis together with Biocenter Oulu Imaging Center, Biobank Borealis of Northern Finland, Faculty of Medicine Laboratory Unit, Research Units of Translational Medicine and Clinical Medicine, and Health and Biosciences Doctoral Program of the University of Oulu Graduate School between 15th and 21st of March 2024.

The course was targeted to local doctoral researchers, and it contained lectures, demonstrations, practical work, and exercises. The participants gained insight on a number of topics from basics on disease modelling in mice, digital pathology and image analysis with both QuPath and Visiopharm softwares.

Throughout the course also information on useful materials, like open-access videos and ebooks, and other relevant resources such INFRAFRONTIER-EMMA Archive, IMPC and Electron microscopy image library of mouse tissues were shared. The students were also provided with a unique opportunity for a tour through a Pathology laboratory and they got acquainted with options of utilising a broad collection of biobanked patient samples in their research.

According to feedback collected, students found the topics highly relevant for their research work and appreciated the practicality of training. Sharing of expertise and close interaction with early carrier researchers lowers the threshold of utilising services provided by local infrastructures, guarantees the high quality of research and eventually improves the competence of individual students within their future research carrier.
