Genetic informationSee publication: Felici A et al. Medullary thyroid carcinoma in transgenic mice expressing a Polyoma carboxyl-terminal truncated middle-T and wild-type small-T antigens. Oncogene 18, 2387-2395, 1999.
Phenotypic informationmedullary thyroid carcinoma (tumor onset: 3-4 months), lethal by month 5-7 (full penetrance); - wavy hair and whiskers (full penetrance); - mild eye cataract, onset by week 4-5 (about 80% penetrance).
Breeding historyHeterozygous males (genotyped by coat phenotype or the presence of cataract) are mated with wild-type B6DF1 females. Females are usually discarded from litters early after birth, since they are not used for transgene transmission. It is preferable to maintain the transgene in heterozygotes since homozygotes develop the tumor faster and die earlier. Life span of heterozygotes is usually 6-8 months.
