Project Period:
2022 – 2025

BY-COVID Scope and Objectives

BeYond-COVID (BY-COVID) project started in September 2022 with the aim of providing comprehensive open data on SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious diseases across scientific, medical, public health and policy domains by strongly emphasise mobilising raw viral sequences, helping to identify and monitor the spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants. The project also aims to accelerate access to SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 and linking patient and research data.

The main objectives of BY-COVID are:

  • Enable storage, sharing, access, analysis and processing of research data and other digital research objects from outbreak research.
  • Mobilise and expose viral and human infectious disease data from national centres.
  • Link FAIR data and metadata on SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19.
  • Develop digital tools and data analytics for pandemic and outbreak preparedness, including tracking genomic variations of SARS-CoV-2 and identifying new variants of concern.
  • Contribute to the Horizon Europe European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Partnership & European Health Data Space (EHDS).

INFRAFRONTIER Contribution to BY-COVID

INFRAFRONTIER is involved in several integral aspects of BY-COVID. Namely, INFRAFRONTIER:

  • Assists in developing the infrastructure required to facilitate access to a broad portfolio of data sources relevant to COVID-19 and future outbreak response namely from non-patient related data sources (WP2)
  • Assists in harmonising data sources within the same domain across jurisdictions (WP2)
  • Integrates open research data from ISIDORe (WP3)
  • Helps in implementing fine-grained usage monitoring and attributing credit to data and workflow contributors (WP3)
