One of the major challenges in basic and applied research is to understand the function of genes in a mammalian model organism, an essential step complementary to the genome sequencing now being carried out in several organisms. More than two thirds of genes do not have a functional annotation to date, and little information is available on non‐coding regions. Therefore, understanding the disease inducing character of a gene variation in the human population is still a challenge. The objective of this conference is to open the discussion on the concepts discovered thanks to the studies conducted with the mouse and rat model organisms. By bringing together internationally renowned scientists, working in academia and in the private sector, we will be able to share a set of discoveries that are crucial for basic research, biomedical research and therapeutic innovation.
